Simply explained, a MR system works in this manner: when a body is placed within a magnetic field, its protons align with and rotate around the direction of that field. If a radio frequency (RF) signal of appropriate frequency is beamed through the body some of the protons absorb the RF energy and change direction or, in other words, resonate. When the RF signal is stopped, the protons return to their original position, releasing the absorbed energy and generating a signal that is picked up by an antenna and then processed by the computer into an image. Images are read by a licensed radiologist who generates a report which is sent to your treating physician.
